George Paul Chalmers
Born Montrose, 1833-1878

Asleep, circa 1871

Oil on canvas
Original Orchar Collection
Museum Number 272-1987-60

Not for nothing was Chalmers known as 'Scotland's Rembrandt'.

This is an exquisite study of lighting effects as the light from the cottage window illuminates the woman's hands and the side of her face. Other areas of the picture are in deepest shadow.
