Bronze Socketed Axe-Head
Bronze socketed axe head, Late Bronze Age 2,750 -2,950 years ago
Field collection: Tealing, Angus
Museum number 1964-21
This axe was made by pouring molten metal into a two piece mould. It may have been used for general carpentry, but it was also a symbol of power and status for whomever owned it. Bronze axes may have also held religious significance. They were sometimes buried in the earth or deposited in watery places.
