Clay coin mould
Clay coin mould for making forgeries
Field collection: Beechwood, Dundee
Donated by Mr J. Boyle
Museum number 1971-539
This mould was used to make forgeries of Roman silver coins. Two different coins have been used to make the mould, one of Caracalla from AD 199 - 200, and one of Gordian III from AD 238 - 244.
Such moulds were stacked up into columns to allow the manufacture of a number of different coins at once. True Roman coins were struck and not cast.
