One of Scotland's finest landscape painters, Nasmyth was influenced by Italian landscape painting of the seventeenth century. He was encouraged to paint Scottish landscapes in an Italian manner by the poet, Robert Burns. Nasmyth travelled widely around Scotland sketching in the open air.
This painting shows Princes Street before development although the spire of St. Andrews church at the foot of the street is prominent.
