Flint industry waste

Field collection: Mesolithic Morton excavstion. Tayport, Fife
Collected by Dr John Coles

Donated by Mr GC Sim
Museum number 1976-912

Waste from flint industry, large fragments, primary and secondary flakes, and small fragments. Mainly grey and brown chalcedony, and different types of stone, including quartz, agate and carnelian. Waste flakes are created when tools are made from a flint core. The presence of waste flakes and cores at the site indicates that tools were crafted here and not transported to the site as finished products.
