A fragment of a lintel from the east gateway of the fort. It is the left hand end of the inscription. The figures include a victory figurine, a capricorn, two confronting pegasi and an eagle with outspread wings.The emblems are those of Legio II Augusta. Legio II Augusta was known to have been involved in the construction of military works in northern Britain, including the building of Hadrian's Wall. Before the discovery of this inscriptions it was not known they had served at Carpow. These inscriptions were put in place to celebrate sections of completed building works. The letters were once painted red. The original panel was more than five metres long
