This sculpture is part of the Orchar Collection which was built up in the second half of the nineteenth century by James Guthrie Orchar, a Dundee engineer.

Harry Bates exhibited thirty six works at the Royal Academy of London.

J.G.Orchar built up his engineering business with William Robertson from 1856 onwards, and also began to take a leading role in the public life of Broughty Ferry, where he lived. He was a leading light in the patronage of the arts in Dundee.
