John Crichton, Surgeon (1772-1860)
John Zephaniah Bell
Born Dundee, 1794 -1883
John Crichton, MD (1772 – 1860)
Oil on canvas, presented to the sitter by the Medical Faculty of Dundee in 1841
Presented by Crichton’s daughters, 1892
Museum number 159-1912
From this genial portrait we can hardly tell that Crichton was an eminent and successful surgeon. This follows the artist's and sitter's religious beliefs, as fellow members of the strict Glasite Church.
Contrast the low-key gravity of this portrait with the arch-sophistication of Ramsay's portrait of Edward Harvey.
