Model of Fossil plant Psilophyton
Species name: Psilophyton sp.

Purchased from Mr S. Caine, 2010
Museum number 2010-11

Model of fossil plant Psilophyton based on fossils found locally. It lived during the Devonian period (about 410 million years ago). Psilophyton was a complex land plant, but it still lacked leaves and roots. Reaching up to 60cm in height, it had irregular branches ending in spore-forming bodies called sporangia. Psilophyton belongs to a group of plants from which ferns are likely to have evolved.
