Model of a Sea scorpion (Eurypterid), based on local fossils. Pterygotus lived in shallow seas during the Devonian period about 410 million years ago. Sea scorpions were the largest arthropods (jointed legged animals) that ever lived. The largest were over 2m (over 6ft) long. The first sea scorpions appeared in the Late Ordovician period (about 443 million years ago) and they became extinct at the end of the Permian period (about 250 million years ago).
