Mortaria were strong mixing bowls with roughened interiors, used for mixing and crushing food. They were essential in the kitchen for preparing sauces, relishes and blended herbs and spices. These fragments are from a mortarium imported from the Warwickshire/Leicestershire border in England, where many kilns have been found.
