Raku fired earthenware

Purchased, 1992
Museum number 1994- 305

‘Raku’ firing gives a piece a smoky black colour and metallic sheen. It is achieved by removing the work from the kiln just as the glaze is melting, then plunging it into a bed of sawdust or paper, covering it to trap the heat, smoke and fire.
