Potters can use the same basic technique to create very different results. Bridget Drakeford's smooth, delicately thrown porcelain bowl [see 1987-404] contrasts with Gerard Lyons' vase. He used the same process but threw his vase in thicker stoneware clay, then carved into the surface creating textured lines in which glaze can pool.
