'Ship' panel pipe
Panel pipe, pre 1842
North America, British Columbia, Haida people
Argillite
Donated by Alexander Cowie through Montrose Museum, 1959
Museum number 1959-540
From the early 1800s, the Haida sold their traditional argillite carvings to seamen, traders and missionaries. As they increased in popularity, 'white men' began to be incorporated alongside stylised animals. This pipe shows recognisable European figures framed by the ropes and pulleys of ship's tackle.
