Peter was one of Christ’s twelve disciples. He was trusted with the key to the kingdom of Heaven, which he holds in his left hand. This is a traditional devotional image – an aid to prayer. The portrait's vertical format and the figure that fills the entire frame, helps focus the viewer's attention on the Saint.
