Kyoto was an important centre for the production of artistic pottery wares for the Japanese market. Dating back to the 17th century, Kyoto wares are typically painted with over-glaze enamel pigments. The simple, asymmetrical shapes of these pieces are inspired by tea ceremony aesthetics.
