This engraving is made from the original oil painting of Thomas Berwick by James Ramsay. Berwick (1753-1828) was a well-known wood engraver and naturalist from Northumbria. His book 'A History of British Birds' is mentioned at the start of Charlotte Bronte's novel "Jane Eyre"
