Tsunami, September 2004
Halima Cassell
Born Pakistan, 1975
Tsunami, September 2004
Hand carved stoneware
Purchased with funds through the National Collecting Scheme for Scotland, 2005
Museum number 2006-24
Cassell's Islamic upbringing sparked her fascination with pattern. Not mathematically composed, this complex piece was carved intuitively. It was inspired by Hokusai's famous 'Great Wave' print of 1831 but has taken on greater resonance since the Tsunami of Boxing Day 2004.
