Baird studied at Glasgow School of Art where he became friends with James McIntosh Patrick. Early Italian Renaissance painting had a profound influence on his work, characterised by extraordinary precision and clarity and involving a tortuously painstaking creative process.
Walter Graham was Baird’s uncle, headmaster of Craig School, Ferryden, near Montrose, who became Baird's mentor following the early death of his father. Graham sat for the portrait in Baird’s studio in Bridge Street.
