McTaggart had a lifelong passion for the sea and many of his paintings take their subject matter from the Scottish fishing industry. As this image shows, McTaggart had an in depth knowledge of all aspects of the fishing industry both off-shore and on the shoreline. This work is so accurate in its depiction of fisherfolk preparing the lines with bait that it could almost be said to be documentary in scope.
This is one of a number of images in which McTaggart focuses on shoreline activity. It is the only one to show bait being prepared for use, rather than gathered.
