Leslie Stuart was born and educated in Dundee. Following his war service in the south of England, Stuart returned to his home city to a career teaching art. He became principal teacher at Grove Academy and for twenty five years instructed evening classes at Dundee College of Art, now Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.

This work was painted whilst he was serving in the Royal Air Force as a war artist. He made three dimensional models, which were used in mission briefings for pilots and navigators.
