Bead necklace, 19th century
South Asia, India
Sandalwood?

Wise Collection
Donated by University of Dundee, 1993
Museum number 1993-381-25

A five strand necklace made of small, rounded, wooden beads threaded on cotton. The necklace has a thick pendant of red silk threads at the bottom. It was collected by Dr Thomas Wise, who lived and worked in India from 1827 until 1851, when he returned to Scotland. Unlike many of his colleagues at the time, he recognised the value of the Indian culture, and invested much effort into understanding and translating it, making it intelligible to western minds.
