Paton trained in London with Millais. Described as the Scottish Pre-Raphaelite, he was never a formal member.

He loved allegorical scenes and the theme here is the conflict between good and evil. In his quest for the Holy Grail, the sinless Sir Galahad crosses Dern Mere. Two buxom fairies try in vain to seduce him.
