Born Lierre, Belgium, 1811-1888

The Blind Beggar, 1875

Oil on canvas
Bequeathed by Sir William Ogilvy Dalgleish, 1923
Museum Number 6-1923

Ask yourself - would you give money to this blind man? Dyckmans painted five versions of this popular subject.

The paint handling is very detailed and highly finished; you can even see the stitches in the clothing. This is in marked contrast with loosely painted, atmospheric works by Chalmers alongside.
