This black and white print shows a number of whaling ships in the Arctic. In the foreground is an icy shelf with a number of men, one of whom is firing a rifle. Beyond that is open sea, with a number of whaleboats in two groups. The group on the right are displaying flags from the stern of their boats and are engaged in hunting a whale. The group on the left are rowing in line astern between an outcrop of ice and the stern of a whaling ship. This ship is 'Brothers' of Hull and is central to the picture, although viewed from the stern. There are a numver of other whaling ships in the background, mainly viewed broadside. The vessel second from the left has most of her sails set and is displaying a flag from her mizzen.
