This lantern slide shows Captain Thomas robertson on the bridge of the Dundee whaling ship S.S. 'Active.' The photograph was taken showing him standing three-quarters facing the camera with a sextant in his hands. He is wearing a dark coat that reaches to mid-thigh and a fur hat. The ship's wheel is about four feet behind him and the rigging perhaps two feet in front, with an upturned whaleboat above his head.
