Muirhead Bone is best known as a prolific printmaker and almost every museum in the country will have prints by him in their collection. His subject matter was landscape, architecture (especially urban construction and demolition sites) and industry.

Bone was appointed Britain's first official war artist in 1916. He arrived in France during the Battle of the Somme and served with the Allied forces on the Western Front. This work was produced on his return - part of a series 'The Yards on the Clyde'.
