Oakes was one of the few painters in the 1870s, to use photography as part of his working practice. This allowed him to develop a precision and freshness of feeling in his landscapes. He exhibited in the 1877 Dundee Fine Art Exhibition and in 1883 was elected an honorary member of the RSA. He was a strong influence on Scottish landscape painters.
