A Cock with a Hen and Three Ducks

Oil on canvas
Bequeathed by George Duncan, 1878
Museum Number 26-1912

The competitive 17th century art market in Holland led many painters to specialise in a particular subject matter. Melchior de Hondecoeter is well-known for his large-scale decorative bird and poultry pictures. He represented them, not as game pieces hung in a butcher's shop but, as living things strutting around in the landscape.
