Crewmen playing football on the ice
Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1972-351-29

This lantern slide shows a distant view of a number of crewmen playing football on the Arctic ice. The photograph was taken from a height, possible the mast or crow's nest of a ship, so the men appear small. There are thirteen men on the ice, in two distinct groups, so they may be two teams with a referee. From the 1870s it was quite common for Dundee whaling crews to play football, either within the ship or against each other. In this case the men are playing football above water that is around two miles deep.
