Drawing of flensing spades
Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1972-351-35

This lantern slide shows a drawing of various flensing spades. There are seven spades in the picture, all with a wooden handle ending in a broad metal end, with differing shapes and sizes. Once a whale had been killed and towed back to the ship, these spades were used to strip off the blubber, which was then taken back to Dundee to be boiled into oil. The McManus, Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum, has a number of flensing spades similar to these.
