Drawing of Mek-to-Sha [Great bear hunter.] One of the Arctic Highlanders
Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1972-351-81

This lantern slide shows a drawing of an Inuit of the Inughuit people. The Inughuit live in north west Greenland and are probably the most northerly race of human beings in the world. When the Scottish Explorer John Ross met them in 1818 he dubbed them the 'Arctic Highlanders' and the name stuck. This gentleman is Mek-to-Sha, which means 'Great Bear Hunter.' He is holding a spear in his right hand as he looks toward the camera.
