A contemporary critic described Mitchell's landscapes as "beautifully painted and revealing masterly technique, good straightforward work of the best class".

He made a good living as a portrait painter, five examples of which survive in the City's collection, including two noted art collectors, the Chief Constable of Dundee and the editor of the Courier.
