Dundee whaling ship 'Balaena' steaming to Disco Island
Lantern slide made of glass

Museum number 1972-351-18

This lantern slide shows the Dundee whaling ship 'Balaena' among broken ice near the mountainous coast of Disco Island. The photograph was taken from astern, so reveals the ship's name quite clearly, with smoke coming from her funnel. The crow's nest is empty, but there are men on the ice beside the ship and there are whaleboats in davits ready to be launched.
