Although Patrick was famous for the last 50 years of his life for his paintings of the cultivated Angus and Perthshire landscapes, he was attracted to the dramatic west coast of Scotland in his youth. Easdale is near Oban.
He later painted a finely detailed large scale version of this subject. This work, flatly painted rather like a poster, is characteristic of his early painting style - before he developed his characteristic fine impasto.
