The dark colour scheme of this painting may be an early work by the artist and recalls work by his father, Josef Israels, one of the leaders of the Hague school. Isaac is better known for his later brightly coloured impressionist paintings. He produced seaside scenes and 'snapshots' of everyday life in Amsterdam.
