False door, 5th Dynasty
Private tombs at Dahshur, excavated by Jacques de Morgan, 1894
Limestone

Donated by Sir James Key Caird, 1913
Museum number 1914-204-26

This 'false' door was part of the mastaba tomb's offering-chapel. Its central panel allowed the Ka (or spirit) of the person to pass through for food. The columns of hieroglyphs include prayers to the god Anubis to provide "funerary offerings on every festival of every day" for Pharaoh's deputy of the pyramid estate Sneferu-inishtef.
