Brockhurst was fascinated by Italian Renaissance painting and gained fame for his hard-edged portraits of dangerous, seductive women including Wallis Simpson and Marlene Dietrich.

Anaïs, the artist's glamorous first wife, was the model for this early portrait. Her loose embroidered coat and dramatic bobbed hairstyle identify her as a member of the British avant-garde.
