The First Wounded, London Hospital, August 1914

Oil on canvas, dated 1915

Lavery put his interest in depicting contemporary life to the test when he became an official war artist. This work shows the return of some of the earliest casualties of the First World War. Using artistic licence he put the foreground soldier into a kilt. Fund-raising prints of it were made during war.
