The title is an old Scots word meaning 'worn out'. Foggie often painted working men and his sitter was Mr Kinnear, then aged 82, who farmed at Leuchars, Fife. The robust, painterly brush strokes suit the subject admirably.
Foggie studied in Antwerp, like his Dundonian friends Stewart Carmichael, John Duncan and George Dutch Davidson.
