This illustration was torn from the pages of a book. It has the words 'Greenland Whale Fishery' written beneath and shows a scene from the early 19th century whaling trade. The main section of the picture shows a sail powered whaling ship with her fore topsails set and most of the rest furled. There is a whale alongside, with a swarm of men flensing - stripping off the blubber. There are also small boats on the water. In the foreground a party of men are about to shoot a polar bear.
