Born London, 1792-1882

The Hollow Tree, 1876

Oil on canvas
Bequeathed by Sir William Ogilvy Dalgleish, 1923
Museum Number 5-1923

Linnell’s poetic visions of the countryside, far detached from the sometimes harsh realities of rural life, were much sought after by collectors.

His house in deepest Surrey was set amid charming woodlands with distant views towards blue hills. Aged 84, Linnell worked on this picture for a year.
