The Immaculate Conception

Oil on canvas

This is a variation on the theme of the Immaculate Conception, the belief that the Virgin Mary is free from mankind's original sin. She is shown here with the infant Christ banishing the serpent of evil. The imagery is based on the Biblical account in which John the Evangelist sees a vision in the heavens of a woman who bears a child and is attacked by a dragon.
