Keiller's jars were made by Maling, a Newcastle company that discovered a way to make packaging containers by machine, rather than by hand and turned them out on a huge scale. Maling's records show Keiller's ordering as many as 1,500,000 jars in a single year.

Keiller's was founded in 1797 by Mrs Janet Keiller and her son, James, as general confectioners. It eventually became one of the most important commercial companies to emerge from Dundee and Keiller's marmalade one of the most famous brand names in the world.
