Sickert was the leading 'English Impressionist' and here follows their technique of using contrasting colours to build depth. The golden sunlight casts purple shadows on the logs in the foreground and on the green foliage. He obviously enjoyed laying on the undiluted paint in flat thick brushstrokes which are dabbed on in a typical Post-Impressionist manner.
