Oil on canvas
Presented by William Shiell, 1950

The Lamentation is not described in the Bible but has been a subject for artists since the 1300s. It is a mourning scene. Mary, the mother of Christ, supports his body, her face wrought with sorrow. Also included are Mary Magdalen who kneels in adoration, Mary Cleophas, St John, gesturing to the crucifix and Nicodemus, who helped prepare Christ's body for burial.
