Lantern slide of whalers anchored to ice in Melville Bay

Lantern slide of whalers anchored to ice in Melville Bay

This lantern slide shows a line of five whaling ships at anchor in Melville Bay. They are waiting for the ice to melt so they can sail after the whales. Every ship has her sails furled and there is very little life on board in the extremely cold conditions.
