In the 19th Century there was a fashion for 'exotic' scenes in art. Here, two North African figures examine the effects of a European soldier. They pause for reflection as they discover a locket, which presumably holds a picture of the dead officer's wife.
Hodgson visited North Africa in 1869. The figures, their style of dress and weapons all reflect what he would have seen on his travels.
