Dallas Brown studied at Duncan of Jordanstone and the Royal Academy Schools in London. As a teacher in Dundee and Glasgow for thirty years, he exerted considerable influence on the course of modern Scottish art.

This painting belongs to the Shroud Series (Ulster), an important body of work in response to sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.
