Model boat with figures, 1930-50
West Africa, Nigeria, Lagos

Donated by Miss A Hutchison, 1983
Museum number 1983-343

This model boat contains the figures of a British official, four paddlers and a steersman. It was carved by Thomas Ona, who depicted everyday life in the traditional Yoruba style, with typically stylised features and large eyes. At first glance they may look like caricatures though this is not the intention. Ona stated that he represented the world as he saw it.
